The 2009 RAAM Award winners were announced in London on 5th February 2009 for the UK and Irish Film Distribution and Cinema Exhibition categories. Sixteen awards were presented in front of a full house at the 5 star Millennium Hotel, Grosvenor Square, London. The awards dinner was dedicated to raise funds for The Cinema & Television Benevolent Fund.

Universal Pictures picked up the award for best movie for Mamma Mia and the award for top distributor in the UK and Ireland in 2008.

Vue Cinema, Doncaster award for the best film and cinema marketing campaign for being the first cinema in the world to introduce the Mamma Mia sing along promotion.

Once again Entertainment Film ruled the independent distributor category with the top box office for two of its films, winning with Sex and the City. Optimum Releasing won the best foreign language category with The Orphanage.

In the awards for top performance in exhibition, Cineworld repeated last year’s success winning the top box office receipts in the UK and Ireland – Cineworld cinemas in Glasgow and Dublin. Vue also repeated its success last year winning the award for Best Circuit in UK and Ireland.

Odeon Cinemas UK won the Britvic sponsored Retail Director of the Year Award in recognition of its best retail offer and operation across its estate.

The Coca Cola Bottlers Ireland sponsored award for the Best Cinema in Ireland was presented to Cineworld, Dublin.

Top Independent Cinema Award UK, sponsored by Walt Disney Studios UK, went to the Ambassador Cinema, Woking. Awards of Excellence were presented to Everyman Cinema, Belsize Park, London and the Savoy Cinema, Truro.

Top Irish independent cinema in Ireland, sponsored by Britvic Ireland was presented jointly to Movies@Dundrum and Movies@Swords, with the excellence award going to the Gaiety Cinema, Arklow.

The Arts Alliance Media award for innovation in cinema was presented to RealD in recognition of their new clever “light doubler” system to radically improve efficiency of 3D and the size of the screens that can be supported and expand the in-theatre 3D opportunities.

  • International and Industry Achievement Awards were presented to Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions, Andrew Cripps of Paramount Pictures International, Mike Ewin of Winstone Films and Paddy Kelly of Paramount Pictures Ireland.
  • The RAAM International Award recognised the outstanding box office achievements of the James Bond franchise. Awards were presented to Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli by Rupert Gavin, CEO of Odeon Cinemas UK.
  • Industry Achievement Award – Andrew Cripps, President of Paramount Pictures International.
  • Industry Achievement Award - Mike Ewin, Director, Winstone Films.
  • Industry Achievement Award – Paddy Kelly, Paramount Pictures Ireland.

The RAAM Awards were established five years ago to recognise film distribution and cinema exhibition. Awards are presented across 12 categories to recognise the achievements of thousands of people who each week makes it possible for the millions of cinema goers to see their favourite movies. The awards are decided by Nielsen EDI box office data, an advisory board which represents all parts of the UK and Irish film distribution and exhibition industry.
